We use our UCL in-house gamma spectrometry laboratory for lake sediment core dating.

Radionuclides including 210Pb, 137Cs and 241Am are measured using low-background hyper-pure germanium gamma spectrometers capable of determining low-level radioactivity Combining data from these measurements enables an accurate chronology to be derived not only to provide dates but also to allow rates of sediment accumulation to be calculated. Our service includes provision of the primary data and an interpretative report including tables and graphs showing interpolated ages for samples within the dateable section of the sediment core. Other radiometric dating techniques such as radiocarbon dating, suitable for dating old sediments, are out-sourced.
