We sample zooplankton communities using net hauls that are pulled upwards through the water column

In deep lakes our standard practice is to use a 25cm diameter net with a mesh size of 53 microns lowered over the side of an inflatable boat close to the deepest point. Samples from three to five vertical hauls of the full water column are collected. In shallow lakes and ponds we collect 5 whole water columns by tube sampling. All sub-samples are pooled to give an amalgamated sample which is fixed in ethanol and stored in a cold room pending analysis.
