We take volumetric samples for phytoplankton analysis using a boat in open water at the deepest part of the lake.

If access issues prohibit the use of a boat at the site, volumetric samples can be taken from the shore or a jetty at the lake outflow. Samples taken from a boat on the open water are taken sub-surface (30cm depth) or from an integrated sample of the epilimnion using an integrated tube sampler. We collect samples from the lake shore using a bottle on the end of a long pole or a weighted bottle attached to a float (30cm from the bottle) on a long rope. Samples are preserved with acidified Lugol’s iodine solution and returned to the lab for storage before analysis.
