Our diatom sampling follows standard protocols to obtain representative samples from lakes and rivers.

Where diatoms are being used as bio-indicators, we aim to sample from the epilithon, normally amalgamating the communities from a number of cobbles by gently brushing the upper surface. Where hard substrata are absent, we sample from other habitats such as the stems and leaves of submerged aquatic plants (epiphyton). Where biodiversity is of interest, we also sample the epipsammon and the epipelon that include specialised floras. Protocols are modified according to the individual needs of clients and/or according to legislative Directives.
